As you may have noticed, I’ve been twittering quite a bit about the Waxman Markey (Cap and Trade) bill.
Please contact your representative and tell them to vote no on this massive taxing/spending bill.
Rep. Robert Latta had a great video on this bill and it’s impact:
The Heritage Foundation has analysis. Among the ramifications:
1. Reduce aggregate gross domestic product (GDP) by $9.6 trillion
2. Destroy an average of 1-3 million jobs, every year
3. Raise electricity rates 90 percent after adjusting for inflation
4. Raise inflation-adjusted gasoline prices by 74 percent
5. Raise residential natural gas prices by 55 percent
6. Raise an average family’s annual energy bill by $1,500 annually
7. Increase the federal debt by 26 percent, which is $29,150 per person
Newt Gingrich provides a forum for finding your representative, their contact information and recording how many of us call, here. Or call the main switchboard at (202)224-3121. Vote expected today as you are finishing up a weeks’ work and looking forward to the weekend. Don’t let them slip this through when you aren’t looking.
Call and tell your representative they work for YOU, tell them YOU want them to vote NO and YOU will actively organize to ensure they do not get re-elected if they do not represent YOUR wishes. This is YOUR country, take it back, take back YOUR government.
Now go, get busy.
I’ve been following the Iranian protests these last days – like a lot of people. I’ve been on Twitter (too much) retweeting credible information in a small effort to help.
But it’s made me wonder: what are these courageous people really doing? Standing up and demanding to have their voices heard. Standing up and demanding that their leaders be fair to all. Standing up and demand that the truth be told.
All reasonable and justified goals, in my mind.
And Americans and the world by and large are supporting their demands and echoing the sentiment.
And yet, when hundreds of thousands of people have gotten together at Tea Parties here to say the same thing, what happened? They are mocked, ridiculed, dismissed and marginalized. That whole ‘tea bagger’ thing is vile and illustrates my point. Did the media and progressives belittle women’s suffrage, equal rights movements, pro-choice, anti-war, Darfur, pro-gay, anti-God, save the freakin’ trees, bees, whales & seals? Is it only those people or issues they agree with that are supported and those they abhor that are held up to disdain? If you love free speech, shouldn’t you support my right to express mine?
Could it be that half a world away, tyranny comes into focus more clearly than it does in Austin or Billings or Cincinnati or Buffalo? Could it be that simply because a party is in power doesn’t mean that the opposition shouldn’t have a voice in Tehran, but it’s perfectly alright if the Democrats ignore the 47% of the country who did not vote for President Obama. They claim a mandate based on less than six percentage points and respond “we won, you lost” when challenged on their agenda.
Official election results claim Ahmadinejad won the election. Whether that’s true or not, if he is returned to power, does that mean that his political party should be able to do whatever they wish whenever they wish to whomever they wish? Does a presidential win mean that stoning women in the street is fine because those in power wish it? Does it justify keeping people in poverty to pursue personal goals (like nuclear weapons)? Does it mean that those who aren’t with you deserve no consideration?
I do not agree with President Obama’s agenda. That’s why I didn’t vote for him. Just because he won the White House should not mean that my voice should be silenced. Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Reid do not have the right to quash honest debate and the exchange of ideas in the House and Senate. This is what a representative government is supposed to provide. The party in power should not ramrod legislation through without a full and honest discussion of the facts of the matter – cost, ramifications, pros/cons. According to Dante’s description, I reckon most politicians can already comfortably fit into several of the circles of hell – yet they just can’t stop compounding their sins – this makes them gluttonous, Circle 3 and there you go. Problem is, they use the American people and our futures to accomplish their goals in this little game. It is about power and how much you can grab.
The protesters in Iran want their voices heard. It’s a sad day in American when I have a better chance at being supported in Tehran than in Toledo.
Here is a copy of the email I sent to my representatives yesterday via Visible Vote:
My name is {insert name}. You are my elected representative. As you know, Ohio has some the of the highest corporate, income and personal taxes as well as unemployment and utilities rates in the nation.
The cost of living continues to increase, however my salary cannot keep up the pace.
Yet Congress continues to spend. It spends my money under the assumption that I am working for YOU.
We’ve been forced to alter our lifestyle but Congress refuses to alter their spending.
I cannot afford to continue to subsidize those who will not pull their own weight and I cannot afford to finance every Congressional whim.
ENOUGH. Vote NO on cap and trade. Do not lay another spending bill at my door. Keep your hands out of my pocket. Stop enslaving this country. We cannot afford this out-of-control government you are forcing down our throats.
From the Heritage Foundation:
Cap and Trade Top Ten List
1. Cap and Trade Is a Massive Energy Tax
2. It Will Not Make A Substantive Impact on the Environment
3. It Will Kill Jobs
4. It Will Cause Electricity Bills and Gas Prices to Sharply Increase
5. It Will Outsource Manufacturing Jobs and Hurt Free Trade
6. It Will Make You Choose Between Energy, Groceries, Clothing or Haircuts.
7. It Will Be Highly Susceptible to Fraud and Corruption
8. It Will Hurt Senior Citizens, the Poor, and the Unemployed the Worst
9. It Will Cost American Families Over $3,000 a Year
10. President Obama Admitted “Electricity Rates Would Necessarily Skyrocket” under a cap-and-trade program. (January 2008)
See the rest of the piece here.
If this passes, American life as we know it will cease. Call or write your representatives today.
Does it not seem that the Obama administration is doing everything it can to ensure that American is cast into a position of being a ‘third world country’?
It’s a frightening thought. How much damage will this guy do before it stops? How many of his policies will be irreversible? So much of what he has done and is attempting to do (nationalizing banks, nationalizing companies, trillions of dollars in programs and bailouts, universal health care, turning over companies to unions) will be so entrenched in the system it will be impossible to extricate ourselves from – think Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid.
His end game seems to be make the U.S.A. a nation of recipients. There are plenty of “entitlementers” out there already. For those of us who are not inclined to let the government run our lives, he will create an environment that will tax us into the poorhouse and/or limit our ability to take care of ourselves by regulation and decreased commerce. Do YOU have the time or the inclination to stand in line for bread or milk or toilet paper?
Do you believe that this country should be forced into soup kitchens because the progressive movement feels they must break us in order to achieve their ultimate goal?
Where are the politicians (regardless of party) who will put their personal interests aside to ensure our survival? It sounds dramatic, but it’s just that simple. There are millions of us ordinary folk standing up, but there are too few politicians entering the battle for the future of this nation.
Lots of scary stuff going on out there right now.
And amazingly, there seems to be increasing push-back against it. One of which is the number of states proposing state sovereignty.
http://www.therightsideoflife.com/?p=5944
More amazing, my state of Ohio is one of them.
http://ohiorepublic.blogspot.com/2009/05/state-sovereignty-resolution-to-be.html
You know the federal government has gone too far when states (which typically have their hands out for every penny they can get regardless of the repercussions) are passing legislation tell Washington to keep their mitts off.
Bravo! Right choice, I’m not taking down my “Don’t Tread on Me” flag, but right choice!!
I have something to say:
Probably most of you have seen (or at least heard) of Susan Boyle’s first audition on Britain’s Got Talent. If not, here it is:
It reminded me so much of the Paul Potts audition a couple of years back on the same program.
Because they are both talent people, you say? Well, yes. But that’s not why.
It’s because of the initial reaction of the judges and the audience. It is the mockery, the disdain, the ridicule of the audience over the appearance of the contestants. And, I’d like to note, especially toward Ms. Boyle.
Neither Mr. Potts nor Ms. Boyle are from the “beautiful people crowd”. They are everyday people. They are the people we work with or live down the block from. They are people we can identify with. They are average. So why are these everyday folks treated this way? Because our society (not just America but Britain and elsewhere) are obsessed with youth and beauty and fame. Without that, it follows that you have nothing to offer. You must be exceptional.
We are fascinated with Paris Hilton who is young and rich and famous and, I guess, beautiful. We are attracted to Britney Spears, who is young and rich and famous and beautiful. We build up the George Clooney’s and Leonardo Di Caprio’s and Johnny Depp’s and David Beckham’s; the Angelina Jolie’s and Halle Berry’s and Jennifer Aniston’s. Then, at some point, we want them to stumble – to fail at something - and we wait to watch them fall. When they do, we revel in it. And we are vicious toward them. Whether it’s weight gain, a nasty divorce, a substance abuse problem, bad or too much cosmetic surgery or (horrors) just getting older. Why? Because we covet beauty and fame and riches. We want it for ourselves, but if we can’t have it, we want to live vicariously through someone who does have it. Then we resent them.
Mr. Potts and Ms. Boyle possessed something that cannot be seen in an instant. Talent, yes, but heart and courage too. They put themselves on the line, and faced the judgment of the panel and audience. How quickly the smirks and eye-rolls stopped when these two started to perform. Suddenly they weren’t the jokes they were expected to be, they were special.
This is the kind of behavior we expect from children. Who among us can’t recall an incident in high school where someone on the ‘outside’ was treated repulsively from the in-crowd? The problem is that this behavior now extends to adults as well.
Are we so shallow that we only appreciate those who are pretty (as we define that)? Do we really believe that a person’s value is measured by their appearance? Is success only measured in dollars or the number of magazine covers someone is on? Can we not appreciate the individuality and gifts of every single person?
My mother said beauty is only skin deep but ugly goes clear through to the bone. She was right. Beauty was present on stage – a man in an ill-fitting suit who was working every day to support his family. Beauty was a 47-year old woman with heavy eyebrows and a not-too-svelte figure who put her aspirations of singing on hold for years to care for her elderly mother. Beauty was the grace they showed in the face of incredible odds and their passion in pursuing their dream. The ugly was sitting in the audience.
I watched Mr. Potts on You Tube after he won and I teared up each time. I choked up every time I watched Ms. Boyle as well. Beautiful voices to be sure, but so much more.
We need start looking beyond the surface. There are many beautiful people out there and we are missing them. We would be more beautiful people for knowing them.
From Pew:
Barack Obama has the widest margin of approve/disapprove in 40+ years.
Partisan Gap in Obama Job Approval
Huh. I’m sure it has nothing to do with his sprint toward socialism or his arrogant “blame America” first, last, always stance.
I’m sure that’s not it.

That Thomas Paine, he still speaks common sense.
Please view this video – it’s excellent! Then send your tea bags. I will be addressing my envelopes tomorrow.
It’s our country, take it back now!
We the People stimulus package
I think the huge bonuses being paid to AIG and other companies that have accepted federal ’stimulus’ money are obscene. I also think in terms of P.R., it is incredibly stupid. However, let these companies run their own business. If I were a customer of AIG, I would move my business elsewhere. That is the way the free market is supposed to work.
Stop this insanity of government intervention and control.
Instead of that, the Congress has decided to profit on AIG’s stupidity:
H.R. 1527
Rep. Gary Peters [D-MI] introduced H.R. 1527: To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to impose a higher rate of tax on bonuses paid by certain businesses owned by the Federal Government.
