Starving for attention?

I really need to vent!
I saw this photograph today of Keira Knightley at the premiere of the newest Pirates of the Caribbean.

Knightley
This is just really frightening. Why do women do this to themselves? I don’t buy that this is her natural weight. I don’t buy that she is naturally slim. I don’t buy that she is small boned. I don’t buy that she has a really, really fast metabolism. This is not a healthy weight.

When did this become the example of perfect womanhood? Why do producers, directors, managers, agents encourage (or demand) this dangerous lifestyle. Where are this girl’s parents and family and friends?

And she’s not alone, you’ve seen them in the magazines and on television:

I saw a quote from Elizabeth Hurley a while ago. She was talking about Marilyn Monroe:

“I’ve always thought Marilyn Monroe looked fabulous, but I’d kill myself if I was that fat.”

Well…first of all, what an self-absorbed egomaniacal witch.

Second, take a look at Monroe and Jane Russell:

Fat? No. Slim? Yes. Skinny? No. Need a sandwich? Looks like they just had one (with chips) and enjoyed it.

Look, nobody can say that Monroe, Russell, Fonda, Bardot, Natalie Wood, etc. weren’t beautiful women. They also looked healthy.

See? Ummm…very healthy

I’ve been thin and I’ve been heavy. Mostly, I’m on the higher side of average. I thought I was supposed to look like a girl (with all those girl parts). It didn’t occur to me that I was suppose to starve myself to eliminate those parts.

I can’t believe things have changed so much that men prefer women that are flat chested with ribs poking through their skin and shoulder blades that could slit your hand wide open.

I’m also going to be mildly irritated when these same women get on the cover of Vanity Fair and People and Good Housekeeping whining about not being able to conceive. Hello? Ya shoulda thought about that when budgeted yourself one leaf of lettuce for the month of September in 2006!

I read that eating disorders and obsessive dieting are increasing among teen and pre-teens (pre-teens!). It’s not too hard to see why if these are the images thrust in their faces on magazine covers and in movies.

My mother has Parkinson’s disease. Her medication dulls her appetite to the point where she doesn’t want to eat. At some point, the Parkinson’s will progress and she will be unable to swallow. She was at 83 pounds a couple of months ago. We have been shoving Ensure Plus supplement drinks at her (6+ a day) and have gotten her up to 92 pounds.

To deliberately do this to yourself is demented.

Women: teach your daughters that beauty is within. Teach her that these women are unrealistic, plastic, and probably, ugly & unhappy people.

Men: appreciate women for their minds, their personality and their spirit. Make them feel beautiful whatever their weight (because that can change every few days). Women are hard enough on themselves. Don’t hound. Love them unconditionally. You don’t want her to love you less when you get love handles or lose some hair, do you? Wouldn’t that make her…shallow?

Keira, Nicole, Lindsay, Nicole, Mary Kate, & Calista – meet me at Dairy Queen, I’m buying.

  1. What about mothers telling their daughters (and sons) that external, physical beauty is insignificant compared to intelligence, creativity and kindness?

  2. sarah

that picture of Keira Knightley doesnt look unhealthy to me. maybe that is because as an adult woman my body frame is similar, and guess what. I EAT!

  3. Keira Knightley isn’t necessarily unhealthy. My friend has a similar buil and she eats more than anyone I know. Up to 5 full sized meals a day. But I agree. The media shoves these kinds of pictures in our face all the time and lowers self-esteem if they don’t look like that.

    http://spacegirlnz.blogspot.com/2006/10/dove-video.html kinda interesting video.

put some weight on girls, we need to hold onto something

  5. Emmy

I agree wholeheartedly. I found this rant when I was searching for photos of Nicole Richie to send to my friend because we were arguing about healthy weight vs. unhealthy weights. Instead of sending her photos, I Sent her the link to this page. You sound intelligent and I thought your entry was witty without being overbearing. Thank you for giving an opinion that didn’t consist of “omg shes sooo skinneee” or something else as inarticulate.

  6. Thanks everyone for all your comments. The most recent news I have seen on Nicole Richie is that, after checking herself in for “treatment”, she checked herself out against doctor’s advise, because she wanted to go shopping. SHOPPING! She then proceeded to go out partying with friends and passed out.

Clearly, this poor girl does not have any concept of how serious being under-nourished can be to her physical and mental health.

I agree with Lolie, external, physical beauty is insignificant compared to intelligence, creativity and kindness.

  7. has it ever occurred to you that this is an illness, a mental illness that wreaks havoc on the body. so stop giving them such a hard time and instead of insulting and attacking these girls, get on with your own life.

  8. John Doe: I agree absolutely that anorexia nervosa is a disease. It’s deadly. I know too, that those afflicted may not realize what they truly look like. They see a fat person in the mirror, not the dangerously under-nourished person they are.

Wiki quotes the prognosis number this way: Anorexia is also considered difficult to treat. A recent review suggested that less than one-half recover fully, one-third improve, and 20% remain chronically ill.

However, let’s refocus this particular discussion where it started. The actresses, models, and celebrities who starve themselves into sickness. The producers, directors, et. al. that demand women look like boys – or worse, boys with silicon breasts – to be employed.

Let’s consider the effect that seeing these unrealistic body types every day on TV, in movies and in magazines. This saturation is potentially ‘brain-washing’ young girls, young women, and men to believe that this is the essence of the perfect woman. How many young women are pushed into obsessive dieting and excersize because they wish to be like Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton? How many are unable to stop and become ‘addicted’ to thinness?

By the way, John, this is a blog. It’s a place where I get to write my opinion about things. You may then comment on those entries (if you care to). Comments which amount to “Oh, shut up” really do nothing to further a discussion.

Oh, and as you can see by the infrequency of my entries, I’m tending to my life as well.

I have read the above statements in their text and agree that this is very fast paced phenomenon : “Girls who are becoming seriously ill from eating disorders”,
and my gosh is it ever scary.
In 2003,my close relative passed away, and I was so distraught over how my mother was not coping, and busy taking care of her with help from relatives, that I became a nervous wreck, in so doing, lost ‘far’ too much weight, and wasn’t even noticing.I came back from my relations house one day after being in their pool, and my mum, regardless of how sick she was, seen how much weight I had lost over the considerable time, and realised I needed help, and I never really realised how dangerously thin I had become over the months. My family and I worked together, and within only weeks was basically back to my normal self, feeling hungry again and craving normal food instead of food ‘scraps’….I understand the pain for those out there who are in recovery for eating disorders…they consume you in every way.

  10. Well put. I loved the comment about the boys. I’m also sick to death of everyone thinking a real woman should look like a 12 year old “boy with silicon breasts.”
Ugh, halloween was two months ago, shouldn’t the skeleton’s have been put away by now?

  11. Amy

okay, to start out with, i understand that there are people who are “naturally” thin regardless of gender and eating habits. I myself am not one of those people, and i will admit right here that i am in the plus sized catagory, and have been so since the age of 10. i know what it is like to have pressure from all around you to be thin. from about age 12-15 i did everything i thought possible to try and lose weight, even some things that where dangerous. thank god none of them worked. but as some people make it a conscious effort, there are those who do it unintentionally. my dad for example. he’s always been “naturally” thin, but he gets so stressed out he forgets to eat. he is a truck driver and there was one time when he had to do long haul (cross country) driving and he was away from us for weeks at a time. when he would finally come home my mother and sister and i would actually be crying when we saw how thin he would get.

and what really gets me is that we are told from a young age that super thin is super sexy, and that everyone should look like a select group of people. i said this somewhere once and i still think its true.

“what in the world are we doing catering only to a select few? when most people in the world are not that skinny, and probably would never be able to be that skinny!! to me thats like telling an elephant that the only way it will be accepted as beautiful is to look like a flamingo. ( no offense :))”

and you know, i wouldn’t mind being a little thinner. but i can honestly say that i never want to be skinny. and that’s the truth. i’ve learned to love myself and all the curves that come with it. and if i get ugly looks and stares. so what, if people don’t like me because i’m not the “ideal”, who’s really suffering here? i know i’m not. at least i’ll know who my true friends are.

  12. Amy

oh yeah, i forgot to mention, i re-read some of the artical again, and i saw the part with Elizabeth Hurley. “self-absorbed egomaniacal witch” just doesn’t cover it all. i have been told on many occasions, both to my face and behind my back, by girls that probably have never known what its like to be overweight, that if they looked like me that they would kill themselves. and that really hurts.

another thing i think i left out of my previous post is that i think what the person who wrote the article is trying to say is that most of these girls started out their career looking healthy, then they decided to shrink down to look skeleton like. what gets me is that most of them where getting alot of male attention when they where a healthy size. take lindsay Lohan for example. all i’d hear when she first started getting alot of attention ( i have a bunch of guy friends who have said this too) was how hot she was, and so on. now after she got really really skinny, i hear those same guys say ” Oh my God! that girl looks sick, someone give her some fried chicken or something!”

i don’t know, thats just my thoughts.

i read all ur comments and i still
feel the same. she looks amazing.
i know its all in the mind but i still
    cant stop.

  15. Me

actually, statistics say that men prefer curves in contrast to skinny bodies.. thank god, bc that’s all i have!! haha

  16. zoe

Such a great post – I totally agree with you on this. I just saw a thing online about Nicole Richie and she looked like she had put on a little weight (looked slightly less gaunt) and I thought ‘oh wow, she’s starting to look healthy’. I find that really scarey, because, in reality, she is still not healthy.

This revealed to me a bigger problem with this trend to be gaunt beyound belief: yes, these particular celebrities might get over it eventually, put on some weight and move on with their lives, but every time celebrities do this, it seems to shift our ideas of what a healthy weight is. ‘Healthy’ comes to equal anything bigger than anorexic – which I think is a really problematic belief.

Skinny girls start to be pitched as ‘healthy’ purley because their bones arent popping out like a girl with anorexia or bullemia.. but the reality is that they are still way too thin.

They still present a picture that the majority of girls just wouldn’t fulfil if they followed a healthy diet. Girls soon find this out, and in order to fulfil the ‘ideal’, start to believe that binge dieting and starvation are the key(s) to looking ‘healthy’. And, surprise surprise, they often gain an eating disorder in the process.

I think we as a society really need to rethink what the hell we’re doing here – why, as you have said, do we pitch to girls that being ‘healthy’ and ‘sexy’ equals looking like a bronzed corpse? You could say that guys prefer these types of women – and idea that I for many years believed – but over time I have come to see that this idea is a complete fallacy.

I’m on the voluptuous side of life, and my partner thinks I’m the sexiest woman he’s ever met. I have more than enough love and happiness in my life, and I look nothing like these girls.

The reality is that, when it all boils down, guys don’t really care whether you’re big, small, tall, short. Try asking a guy ‘does my bum look big in this?’ More than likely they’ll respond with one of the following: ‘oh god, don’t ask me, i don’t care’; ‘you look great’; or, out of absolute frustration at being asked for the 342893849th time: ‘yes, for christs sake, go on a diet’.

And, in the rare case that a guy might say the latter, I really think that most guys would drop this remark purely because they’re fed up with you complaining about your appearance and think that a diet might make you happy for once (i.e. might make you shut up about how bad you look and move you away from the mirror).

Most genuine guys, I think, probably just want you to be happy – they don’t want you to be constantly worried about yourself. If you can’t hold a conversation and have a good personality, and always act ‘weighed down’ by your appearance, then yes, you will have problems – both with guys and in life generally. THOSE are things to worry about and which will make you look unattractive!

Happy, confident and content girls get guys and feel good about their lives, so instead of saying no to that chocolate milkshake next time you’re out with your guy, get it with two straws and for once enjoy the fact that you’re a woman and that you are alive.

Feminism hasn’t fought for all these years so women can walk around jabbing themselves with their own bones – they did it so women could feel good about themselves for once. SO give yourself a break and feel proud about who you are – whatever your body shape!

  17. Fallon

Why do women do this to themselves you ask?

    It’s a disease.

I’m sort of offended with your post.

Not all people who starve want attention.

I fully agree with John Doe’s comment.

  18. ANA

  23. kirsten

and these girls dont necessarily want attention, they want to fit into that cookie-cutter: designer dresses.

  24. john

    those babes are hot

exposed rib bones are hotter than exposed breasts nowadays, get over it.

  25. john

and another thing: i bet you don’t surf the web looking for pics of fat DUDES either, so get off your high horse

  26. Clare

I totally agree with everything the OP has said. And I would like to add that the people above me should wake up and realise that anorexia is a MENTAL ILLNESS and people who have it do not look good or feel good! Marilyn Monroe was a beautiful and curvaceous woman and get this, she was a size 16!!!! And I am not fat before anybody says I’m jealous of these malnourished fools.

  29. Mia

What are you talking about? Keira Knightley looks AMAZING!

  30. brodie

i have to agree with the article.
i am only 15 years old, and feel the pressure of thinness, having developed many curves.
i noticed that teenaged boys and media seem to be the problem with teenage girls these days.
for example: myguy friend left his playboy mag out one day by accident, and i couldnt help but take a peek at what he deemed “sexxy”. the women in these magazines are very skinny, perfectly and unrealistically shaped, and shaved, toned, and tanned to perfection, aswell as being edited by computer software before publishing. i am natural blond with blue eyes and a large chest (and booty i might ad), but being curvacious makes alot of them turn away. is this what we want to teach the men of the future???!!

  31. Nicole Richie

It would be nice if all of you would stop talking about us and look at your selves. You don’t realize all the pressure put on people who are famous.

You don’t have a camera up in your facce every second. When you see a ‘too thin star’, why don’t you ask if the picture is fake or real ? There is such thing as photoshop.

  32. heather

The picture of Kiera Knightley doens’t look unhealthy to me. Maybe because I am built basically IDENTICAL to her…I am thin and have always been. But guess what…I can out eat any man I know…It really is all about your build, rate of metabolism, exercise, and WHAT you eat. I have 2 small children who keep me very busy. I don’t exercise much at all…and by “much” i mean…the only exercising I do is chasing them. Don’t judge people by a photograph. People can be thinner than most and still be healthier than ppl who look 20 pounds heavier. It’s not about the way you look, it’s about your health.

  33. Savaghe

Im tired of this bullshit from lazy fat asses.I saw a 300+ girl at the gym sitting on her ass and doing ankle lifts while reading a book then she leaves.Get off your asses and get healthy instead of being jealous of hot girls. If fat chicks were in people would be complaining about heart attacks. If this whole thing is such a big health problem then why is it that Americans are at the fatest theyve ever been and health problems due to obesity are greater that from smoking? My roomate would eat 6 hamburgers for breakfast then wondered why his 2 block walk to class wasnt making him thinner. You guys really take the cake…pun intended.

  34. Leanne

How is that even possible… Keira looks like she has no breasts. That is definitely not healthy.

I agree with you! Even though people nowadays do send out messages about being healthy and not excessively skinny, I think most girls still secretly wish they were 20 pounds slimmer. They need to understand that not everyone can be that skinny and they need to just intrinsically appreciate their bodies. But looking at all those comments made by women and men alike… I don’t know who is going to convince young girls growing up in this world.

  35. Leanne

“Men: appreciate women for their minds, their personality and their spirit. Make them feel beautiful whatever their weight (because that can change every few days). Women are hard enough on themselves. Don’t hound. Love them unconditionally. You don’t want her to love you less when you get love handles or lose some hair, do you? Wouldn’t that make her…shallow?”

    And… touché!

  36. AS

It is just as much of a mental illness as compulsive over eating, but no one feels compelled to rant about THAT.

Try living in the starvation prison for most of your life, then you can “rant”.

  37. OK THIS ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMANS IN TH WORLDS THEY ARE INTELIGENT, BEAUTY,AND RICH, WHAT MORE YOU WANTS?

  39. Sarah

Absolutely wonderful post. Just had to tell you that, agree completely. =)

  40. Erm

For the people who think that Marilyn Monroe is a size 16, get real! Sizes change over time. Marilyn Monroe was just under 5’6 (36-23-36) and fluctuated between 120 and 140 pounds. Doesn’t sound like a size 16, does it? So stop holding her up as some sort of icon to the “big girl” or whatever.

Some girls are naturally skinny. At 5 feet and 83 pounds, 34-24-30, I am naturally pretty damn small. I eat a lot–sometimes even more than my 190 pound boyfriend–and my weight has never fluctuated. I ONLY started doing cardio within the past 3 weeks, and I even work in a Psychology lab researching methods to teach children to eat healthier. How small I am is purely genetic and has nothing to do with dieting or some other absurd behavior.

I used to believe that guys liked girls with curves, but I have been having conversations with several guy friends, including my boyfriend and 3 brothers, who tell me that if guys didn’t like skinny girls, they wouldn’t be into models. Models just would not be that skinny. And while they may be a little brainwashed by the media, that doesn’t mean that they like the skinny look any less. My boyfriend, for example, thinks that Nicole Richie and Mary Kate Olsen are pretty damn hot.

And another thing, what statistics are you talking about that guys like girls with curves??? As a Psychology major particularly interested in healthy and body image issues, I have done extensive research on this. Just do a quick search on Google Scholar (“female body image” or similar) for the actual research.

Turns out Hispanic and white men actually prefer women that are THINNER than the average woman today. When shown drawings of different body types, these high school and college age males will actually select thinner bodies–skinnier than even their own girlfriends! The body type they actually prefer is much more “boyish” than what was POPULAR 10-20 years ago. Now, black men, on the other hand, actually DO prefer women closer to the average. And by average, I’m talking the average weight today, not “slim.”

But let’s not bash these girls. Who knows if they are skinny because of genetics or a pre-existing condition, such as hyperthyroidism, or because of an actual eating problem. Instead of bashing people for being skinny, maybe we should just focus on encouraging people to create healthy lifestyles by eating balanced diets and getting in ~30 minutes of cardio 3x a week.

And until we can prove that we are indeed “healthy”–not some crapped up definition of healthy that means we shouldn’t ever worry about what we eat and accept the size we become without ever exercising–we shouldn’t be bashing other people’s “health”.

  41. DD

I think any woman who is healthy and happy, who cares about her life and herself is beautiful. I don’t think there is one standard and weight for beauty, despite what Hollywood and models are portraying. Beauty is only skin deep. It’s who the woman really is that matters for more than just a night of sex.

I don’t know any men (and I mean men, not college boys) who like the near death from starvation look. They like either normal weight or a little meat on the bones. If all those college boys really like the starvation look, then we are sending the wrong message. Life is not about how people look unless your are a model.

For those of you who aren’t getting it, there is a difference between someone who has anorexia or is naturally very thin and people who do this on purpose. Not only is it unhealthy and unattractive, it says that there is only one way to look and there is something wrong with people who are actually different from this ugly standard. Whatever happened to being your own unique person instead of being like whatever people are saying you should be. I can’t believe all the sheeple who copy and admire anything in a magazine or movie. Reminds me of 7th grade.

  42. AGE

yes! she looks very healthy! FOR CHRIST SAKES!

c’mon people!… this is not healthy at all… and YES all girls with this disease, anorexia or bulimia, are craving for attention… they are mentally ill, and the need of attention is one of the causes

and forgive me but this picture doens’t look a bit sexy, healthy, or cute or nothig, is awful, I am a very fit person, I am a dancer and an engineer, exercise everyday, eat well, and I love my body, im not a size zero, nor 3 nor 5… im 7… and im proud… i love who I am, not because of wearing any designer or being super skinny… i love myself because im smart, i have lots a friends who cares about me, a beautiful family, a career, and many things that are nothing to do with my looks… and I do not envy celebrities lifestyles at all… I have a plenty life, that is free of drugs, mental illness, material needs, and all that vain stuff… im so happy of being who I am and feel sorry for lots of people that wrote some comments in here, that showed their narrow minds, lack of smarts, lack of knowledge, and lack of happiness…

  43. Jaden

Wow, Keira looks fine. She’s always been thin. Leanne, not all women have tits. Skinny girls are often flat-chested. I don’t know how you people going around saying that thin girls have the body of 12-year-old boys. You don’t think that’s hurtful? I was incredibly thin growing up due to an extremely fast metabolism. I ate like a pig and couldn’t gain a pound. I’d eat and eat until I puked. Then I’d have to eat more, because I’d just thrown up all the calories I’d eaten. It was crushing to my self-esteem to be picked on for being so skinny. I was constantly called “unhealthy” and “anorexic”. Now, I’m 18, and I’m glad I’ve finally gained enough weight to be considered “normal” by our obese society. You think big girls are the only ones who feel pressure? Thin girls are attacked on the daily for just being skinny. Don’t jump to conclusions about people you don’t even know. Sure, it’s obvious that Nicole and Lindsay (back when those photos were taken), had lost a dramatic amount of weight, since we know they weren’t naturally built like that. Anyway, people need to learn to be content with their own bodies, and stop putting down girls who have a different body type.

  44. Isabella McBean

I am emailing to enquire as to whether I could use the image of Nicole Ritchie and Lindsay Lohan from your July 6, 2006 blog ‘Starving for attention?’ in an educational level3 media studies NCEA documentary? This video will not be screened in public and is for educational purposes only. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

  45. Looking at these pictures I feel better being big and tall.

  46. Caroline

I’m extremely offended by this. Believe it or not, some women are naturally very thin like that and not all women starve themselves. Its is NOT ugly. For example, I have always been very skinny my whole life and I have gotten rude and hurtful comments about it. It’s offensive to people like us for others to think women purposely starve to look beautiful. I think all of those women are beautiful and healthy regardless of their weight. It doesn’t make a woman any less of a women just because she doesn’t have big tits or an ass. Sorry some of us aren’t statistics of the growing obesity rate. You’re allowed to your own opinion, but I would watch what you say…some are very sensitive to subjects like this.

  47. Jess

I found this article whilst researching for my dissertation, now I agree with some of the comments that yes there are people who are naturally thin, I have a friend who is tiny and no matter what she eats she stays the same. However when I look at Nicole Richie and Lindsey Lohan I see girls who have become like this due to pressure from the media who encourage this look. These girls were never like this in the past and if they were then I would agree it would be fine but they used to have curves and when they say that they are naturally like this it is somewhat a joke. They were in magazines and on television before they became as thin as they are. I think maybe we should not abuse the girls but look at the people who start this trend and require it, the people behind the celebrities. These poor girls are like this because of media pressure maybe if the media did not slate them if they put on a bit of weight then they would not be like this. Shouldn’t we just accept people for who they are and not for what they look like? Just a thought.

  48. Wishiwerefat

Wow! That was a beautiful article and I loved the ending sentence. 😉
What I wanna say is I’m 14, a guy, and personally I’ve always preferred girls who were a bit on the skinnier side. But I’m not sure if that’s just coincidence or whatnot. But it just so turns out both the 2 girls I’ve had really big crushes on are vegetarians. So healthy skinny not anorexic. I’ve been trying to bulk up this summer, and I’ve found out it’s just as hard to gain weight as to lose weight. But the celebrities are just so superficial and I don’t think any of them are attractive. The only woman who I think looks good skinny is Taylor Swift and she’s definitely naturally thin.

But yeah, ladies, don’t starve yourself. I don’t wanna touch something that resembles a skeleton.
